Leslie BurgeriSchool Graduate Leslie Burger Elected President of the American Library Association

Leslie Burger (MLS, 1974), director of the Princeton (NJ) Public Library, has been elected President of the American Library Association (ALA) for the term 2006-2007. In late April this win was announced over the rival candidate, Christine Lind Hage, director of the Clinton-Macomb Public Library in Clinton Township, Michigan.

Burger is a past president of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) of ALA, the New Jersey Library Association, and the Connecticut Library Association. She currently serves as an at-large member of the ALA Council and is a member of the ALA-APA Pay Equity Committee. She also has chaired the ALA Awards Committee, several ASCLA committees, and the ALA Public Awareness Committee's Campaign for America's Librarians Task Force.

Before joining the Princeton Public Library, Burger worked at the New Jersey State Library and the Connecticut State Library in the areas of planning and library development. She is the owner of Library Development Solutions, which she founded in 1991. In her consulting practice, Burger has worked with more than 100 libraries of all sizes and types on planning, space needs assessments, evaluation, and program implementation.

Leslie Burger earned her MLS from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1974 and later a master's in organizational behavior from the University of Hartford. She received her bachelor's degree from Southern Connecticut State College.

Two other iSchool alumni were elected to the ALA Council in the recent election:

  • Audra Caplan, MLS 1985, Director of the Harford County (MD) Public Library, and
  • Charles Kratz, MLS 1976, Director of the University of Scranton Library System.
  • Dr. Ann Weeks, Professor of the Practice at the College, was re-elected to the Council.
  • Linda Williams, MLS 1977, will be the President of one of the ALA Divisions, American Association of School Librarians. Linda is Director of Library Media Services, Anne Arundel County (MD) Public Schools.
