Alumnus of the Year 2004: Susan Fifer Canby

Congratulations to Susan Fifer Canby, Alumna of the Year. Ms. Fifer Canby (M.L.S. ’74) was honored by the University of Maryland at the Alumni Awards Gala on April 17, 2004.
Susan Fifer Canby is vice president of the National Geographic Society in Washington D.C., where she uses nearly 30 years of experience in information management to shape and direct the society's libraries and information services. She supports the editorial and business staff and partners of the National Geographic Society with a team of 26 librarians, archivists, record managers and indexers. She also manages the society's internal university as well as its Intranet/Portal and Knowledge Management Teams. Canby is president of the D.C. Special Libraries Association and is a former member of the Online Computer Library Center Member's Council and the Washington Literacy Council. She is also vice president of the Board of the Sandy Springs (Md.) Museum. In 2001, the Special Library Association recognized her with the Innovations with Technology Award; that same year she was featured in Library Journal.
Dominique Dawes (B.S. ’02) presented the award to Ms. Fifer Canby. Johnny Holliday, radio announcer and Voice of the Terrapins, was Master of Ceremonies for the Gala. Ms. Fifer-Canby delivered the commencement address to iSchool graduates in December 2003. Congratulations, Susan Fifer Canby!
